Gluteus Medius

Gluteus Medius ('glute med') is one of three gluteal muscles and is found on the outer surface of the pelvis. This muscle acts to internally rotate the hip and abduct the hip (move the leg away from the midline of the body).
Dysfunction and trigger points in the glute med muscle can present as lower back pain, and pain felt in the back and side of the hip region. Trigger points can be caused by underuse, or overuse. For example, too much sitting can weaken glute med, and too much repetitive activity can cause excess tension. When trigger points are present, stretching the glute med muscle can help to promote restoration of normal muscle tone and alleviate referral pain in the lower back and hip regions.
